The batwa are the indegenous forest people that were turned into conservation refugees after Mgahinga National park was gazetted in 1991. They lost their habitat for the surviving mountain gorillas and roam in the nearby villages with no rights to land ownership. The batwa experience is where guests are guided by the batwa tour guides showcasing how they lived in the forest in caves, food gathering and hunting.
The proceeds from this experience are shared between the park authorities and Batwa communities.
